We are a part of one of the biggest Christian Youth Organisations in the UK.
The Boys’ Brigade was founded in Glasgow in 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith. It was the first uniformed youth organisation, from which all other major youth organisations have formed.
Our Company first opened in 1962 and have been standing firm at Whitton Baptist Church, despite other Companies and even Battalions closing down around us.
We are a Christian based Youth Organisation, open to all children and young people aged from 5 to 18 of any faith and background. We encourage our members to attend our Family Church Service at 10:30 on Sunday mornings.
We provide a balanced programme of activities where our leaders work in a relevant and creative way. We hope that through our programme, we are able to make a positive contribution to a young person’s life and be able to share our faith.
Above all BB is fun, exciting and safe!
Message from our Captain
I have been a member of the Boys’ Brigade since I was 4 and I’ve loved every minute!
Through being a member of BB I have developed a series of very close friendships, not only within our Company, but in the BB as a whole.
I enjoyed my time as a boy through Anchor Boys, Junior Section and then Company Section and Seniors. Once I had acheived my Queens’ Badge, I went on to do my Officers Training.
At this point, I became the Band Instructor where I taught the Company Section and Seniors to play the Side Drum or Bugle. A task I found particularly difficult as I can only play the side drum! I developed my skills and changed my approaches and we soon had a fantastic sounding group. We still practise weekly and can often be found playing at local events or parading the High Street.
A few years later I became Officer in Charge of Company Section and Seniors. I knew the members very well as I had been helping to run the evenings in the past. By running the section I found I learnt another new set of skills, yet at the same time was able to teach the group on the topics as set out by the badge work scheme.
In September 2015, BB presented me with my biggest challenge to date, I had put my name forward to become the new Company Captain! The Church Members gladly accepted my placement, and it all became a reality.
Boys’ Brigade is all about learning new skills, overcoming obstacles and having a good time with some fantastic people. I feel that here at the 1st Richmond upon Thames Company we are able to fulfill this. I am proud of each and every one of our young people and I am pleased to enjoy the privilege of seeing them grow into outstanding young men.
